K - 2 Phonemic Awareness Lessons (Heggerty)

Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds. The ability to hear, isolate, manipulate, blend and segment sounds in words is the FOUNDATION to strong reading and writing. These lessons are done in every K-2 classroom to help build these essential skills. The lesson videos on this page will help support strong phonemic awareness.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT LESSONS!

New lessons will not be posted after the week of July 13th. We encourage all families to review the previous lessons from May - July. All lessons build on skill difficulty. Going back and reviewing lessons will allow students to solidify their skills and will support stronger word reading. All lessons are archived within Mrs. Hawkins’ and Mrs. Stanley’s webpages. Just use the links to view each lesson again. We look forward to seeing you all at the end of August!

Advanced Word Lessons

These lessons offer more practice with advanced phonemic awareness skills and closely examine the rules and patterns we use to successfully read and write words. These lessons are NOT intended for beginning readers.

Advanced Word Lesson #4

Advanced Word Lesson #4 is a review of Lessons 1 - 3 and adds our final patterns of ei/ey & eu/ew that relate to our rule that no English words can end in I,U,V, or J. This lesson is meant to be done in two sessions. The review ends at about the 30 minute mark. Please use this lesson and review the other lessons over the next two weeks. Advanced Word Lesson #5 will be posted on July 8th.
