New Update 2020-2021 school year

By Mrs. J. Swatsworth

Students MUST wear masks throughout the school day.  It will be helpful to discuss the importance of keeping their masks on and washing their hands properly.  Students will be encouraged to remain 6 feet socially distant from one another throughout the day as well.  Sharing of school items and food will not be permitted.

Because of these many changes, students will need to provide their own supplies (crayons, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, markers, watercolors, tissues, mask).  Students will also need a set of headphones for computer usage--plug in ones are encouraged so that charging does not become an issue.  (I found some for less than $10 at walmart).

Classroom NEEDS!

I ask that each family donate at least one box of tissues.  Additional items that are ALWAYS welcomed are hand sanitizer, Clorox/antibacterial wipes, and baggies from sandwich to gallon size (preferrably ZIP TOP ones that are easier to open and close for our first graders).

Reading Class

We will continue using the Reading WONDERS series.

This series allows your child to read at their instructional level on a daily basis.  We will do some content as a class and some content will be provided in small groups.  Students will be expected to work independently on a daily basis.

There is an online companion to the series that allows the students to access their text online (and thus at home!).  I will provide this information when it is available.  The students will be able to preview, read, and even do some skills work online.  I think this will be a great school-home connection for students, teachers, and parents.

Reading with and TO your child is still very important to their education.  I encourage parents to read with their children nightly.  Make it fun!  Take turns reading and enjoy the time together.

Educational Links

Please find the following list of links helpful in your student's education.

1.  Accelerated Reader

Book Finder = http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx

Testing Site = https://hosted171.renlearn.com/25543/?1461Nav=|&NodeID=74

Your student is familiar with the Accelerated Reader program.  He or she will need an AR book to read regularly in class.  The Book Finder site allows you to look up a book by it's title to see if it qualifies as an AR book.  The testing site allows your student to take a quiz on the book after reading it.  This program is meant to not only encourage reading, but enhance student learning from reading.  The best way to improve reading is by reading!

2. Quizlet

Students can search and study "flashcard-like sets" on this site.  Any concept you can think of, from reading to math, and even science...There are cool ways to "LEARN" and play games on the site too!  Explore and have FUN learning.

3.  Arcademic Skill Builders
http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/
This is a site I will use in math class when we are working towards mastery of facts for additon, subtraction, and multiplication.  It has multiple-player games that help the students with memorizing the facts.  Memorization is key in learning basic math facts.  The site also includes games for other subjects/concepts (i.e. synonyms and antonyms, spelling, etc.)

4.  Enchanted Learning

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html

This website is very informational.  You can find facts about just about anything by searching for it on this site.

5. Scholastic - Darwin & animal adaptations site
