Why Teach Writing?

Writing is an essential life skill. By organizing, developing, and editing written communication, students learn to convey information and ideas effectively. Students become better writers by paying close attention to both the quality and the types of writing they read. As writers, students are called on to consider the focus, content, organization, style, and conventions of their communications.

We can use writing to share our unique experiences, to explain something, or to sway our readers with our opinions. While writing about our ideas, we often clarify them. Writing provides an immediate and lasting record of what we know. Writers express their knowledge and ideas to inform or entertain others. Good writing results when writers respond to their own reading, the world, and their ideas in an involved way.

Good writing is a combination of many elements: excellent grammar, strong vocabulary, keen observations, and clear organization. Careful revising and editing are critical to creating clear and precise writing.

Teaching the processes of writing is the focus of this English class. The writing process involves modeling, practicing, editing, and revising compositions. The writing workshop provides a platform for modeling clear expectations and focused instruction on the strategies of effective writers.
